DSDN111 Project 3 final

DSDN111 P3 Summary:

For this third project I used an analytical approach of the hip joint to help me decide on the set of movements I wanted for my final form. Looking at the movements the bones in the hip could move, I mapped the limits of those movements. Using that mapping of movements I looked for different ways of emulating those same movements without simply using a ball joint. The end result is a combination of rotation, sliding and hinges, encapsulated in an outside structure in the same way as the femur slots into the pelvis bone.

A couple images of the presentation drawing (sorry about the two parts I didn't manage to get an A3 scan of it):

Finaly a few photos of the final form:

The idea for this project took its inspiration from sea creatures. The tread is used as an element of tension that holds the whole piece together. The outer "shell" goes around the wire "skeleton" and suggest the curve it forms continues around the wire. Finlay there is a play on transparency between the different parts of the shell that reveal smaller triangular shapes.
A note on the presentation drawing, it is deliberately made of two A4 pieces taped together and folded so that the shell parts drawn in the middle will also fold in the same way as they do on the model.

DSDN111 project one group shot

A couple group shots of my final three forms for project 1.

I tried to go with figure ground as my main design element with intersection being a secondary design element, in the card model the lines meet at the bottom of the main fold while in the wire form, they form a point where the ends of the wire meet. Finally, in the mass form, the lines meet at the top of the pyramid that is suggested by the relation between the positive and negative spaces.

The figure ground relations are slightly different in each case, for the card model, the planes form two open shapes that our perception instinctively closes to form two pyramidal shapes of equal volume. In the wire form, the wires form three planes that intersect each other and form two pyramidal forms. Finally the the mass form uses the mass and intersecting lines to suggest the existence of a pyramid.

To sum up, this project was quite interesting, and working with three different materials was challenging but quite rewarding in the end. I have the feeling that going through the design process and than taking the result and using it to start a new process is very important and quite interesting.
